The range of clothing shows developments in fashions available for girls in the post war period and, through the increasing size and sophistication of the garments, charts Caroline own developments. \nThis dress, probably worn when she was about  6 years old, was made for the department store, John Walsh of Sheffield and was made in Belgium. In the 1950s European clothing for children was very popular in Britain and, in particular, this style of hand woven woollen dresses from Belgium were a particularly popular import.","physicalDescription":"Cream dress with short, puffed sleeves, knitted cuffs and waistband. The dress has a high neck and Peter Pan-style collar. the waistband is gathered using a threaded drawstring belt made of  strands of wool and two pom poms at the ends. The dress is plain cream fabric of a wide woven fabric. It has been embroidered in wools with the repeating motif of a blue duckling and an intermitent line of red running stitches. The pattern is repeated around the chest and sleeves of the dress and all around the hem. The dress is unlined and has a wide and hand-tacked hem. This is a rare opportunity to follow the changing size, fashions and clothing choices (either her own or those chosen for her) of one individual throughout their childhood of the mid 1950s-1960s including those clothes worn for every day as well as those saved for best.
