Mr Reed, who lived at 3 Berkeley House, Hay Hill, Berkeley Square, London, was a considerable collector of English 18th-century furniture.  He originally intended to bequeath a larger part of his collection to the Museum.  This chair, with nine other pieces and a set of chairs (W.60 to W.70-1953 inclusive) were given to the Museum during his lifetime and were for a short time displayed together in Gallery 40.
