Acting as the official photographer for the British Black Panther Movement, Kenlock’s photographs record the group’s activism and the instances of racism they aimed to combat. \r\n\r\nThis photograph depicts Desmond’s Hip City, the first black-owned record shop in Brixton and a thriving cultural centre for music within Britain’s black community. Kenlock documented the damage to the shop as an example of the racially motivated violence carried out by members of the right-wing group the National Front.\r\n\r\nThe V&A acquired ten photographs by Kenlock alongside work by his contemporaries Charlie Phillips and Armet Francis as part of the Staying Power project. Staying Power is a five year partnership between the V&A and Black Cultural Archives. The project aims to explore black British experience from the 1950s to the 1990s through photographs acquired by the V&A and oral histories conducted by Black Cultural Archives.","physicalDescription":"A black and white photograph of the interior of a record shop, as people clear up damage. Records and record sleeves hang from the ceiling and fill shelves behind a counter covered with posters in the background. Four people clean up glass and detritus on the shop's checkerboard floor. A man to the far left holding a broom wears a cloth cap, while another man walking towards him has an afro hairstyle and wears a suit with flared trousers.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Neil Kenlock","id":"AUTH319186"},"association":{"text":"Photographer","id":"x43821"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"photographic paper","id":"AAT14190"}],"techniques":[{"text":"gelatin silver process","id":"AAT139114"},{"text":"photography","id":"AAT54225"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Gelatin silver print","categories":[{"text":"Black History","id":"THES48989"},{"text":"Politics","id":"THES48908"},{"text":"Shopping","id":"THES48895"},{"text":"Music","id":"THES253065"},{"text":"African Diaspora","id":"THES48873"},{"text":"Men's clothes","id":"THES49043"},{"text":"Photographs","id":"THES48910"},{"text":"Caribbean","id":"THES286921"}],"styles":[{"text":"documentary","id":"x37881"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2013GC9802"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"LVLF","id":"THES49656"},"free":"","case":"SP","shelf":"2","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"photograph","id":"AAT46300"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Brixton","id":"x36752"},"association":{"text":"Photographed","id":"x30151"},"note":""},{"place":{"text":"London","id":"x28980"},"association":{"text":"Photographed","id":"x30151"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1974","earliest":"1974-01-01","latest":"1974-12-31"},"association":{"text":"Photographed","id":"x30151"},"note":""},{"date":{"text":"2011","earliest":"2011-01-01","latest":"2011-12-31"},"association":{"text":"Printed","id":"x46159"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[{"object":{"text":"E.217-2012","id":"O1245595"},"association":"Depiction"},{"object":{"text":"E.218-2012","id":"O1245596"},"association":"Depiction"}],"creditLine":"Supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund.
