John Hayter entered the Royal Academy schools in 1815 and began to exhibit at the Royal Academy in the same year, becoming established as an artist in the 1820s. His portrait drawings were particularly popular. \r\n\r\nThis sheet of informal, intimate studies represents John and George's sister Ann, herself a miniature painter. It was made during a period between 1822 and 1827 when Ann and John lived together in Upper Grafton Street, London. It appears to show her working at an embroidery frame. \r\n\r\n","physicalDescription":"Drawing with three studies of Ann Hayter working at an embroidery frame; one from the front, one from the side, and one from the back.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"John Hayter","id":"A4230"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"Graphite","id":"AAT11098"}],"techniques":[{"text":"drawn","id":"x30545"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Drawn in graphite.","categories":[{"text":"Drawings","id":"THES48966"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2012FJ7726"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"LVLH","id":"THES49654"},"free":"","case":"PD","shelf":"185","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"drawing","id":"x32498"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"London","id":"x28980"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca.1822-27","earliest":"1817-01-01","latest":"1827-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by Isobel Stewart ","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"20.8","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"25.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Drawing of Ann Hayter working at an embroidery frame, graphite, by John Hayter, London, c.1822-27.","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["E.294-2012"],"accessionNumberNum":"294","accessionNumberPrefix":"E","accessionYear":2012,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-04-08","recordCreationDate":"2012-03-29","availableToBook":false}}
