Smith Archive","type":""}],"summaryDescription":"A.M. Shorose was an employee of The Persian Carpet Manufacturing Company Ltd in Sultanabad, Iran, and Charles R. Smith (born 1866) was his former colleague. In this letter dated 9 November 1901, Shorose writes to Smith, who has moved back to Kidderminster, England, and discusses practical arrangements for Smith's remaining property in Sultanabad. As well as enquiring after Smith's sister Jane who had accompanied her brother to Iran, Shorose provides an update on their common acquaintances in the carpet business community around Sultanabad, including colleagues in the rival firm of Ziegler's. He also follows up on the shipping arrangements for Smith's private effects, some of which have been lost en route.\r\n\r\nThe C.R. Smith archive consists of an album of 60 mounted albumen prints (predominantly portraits and topographical views, taken in Iran and Iraq), a further 24 loose photographs, and a series of letters and memos. These document a correspondence between C.R. Smith and various colleagues made throughout 1901, when he was approached to join a new carpet enterprise in Tabriz. He duly left Sultanabad where he had been working for the Persian Carpet Manufacturing Company, but by July of the same year he had returned to his native Kidderminster in England. It is not known if the Tabriz business plan was ever realised, but J.C.P. Hotz and Son had gone out of business by 1903.","physicalDescription":"Letter from A.M. Shorose in Sultanabad, Iran, to C.R.
