They would have been created for role play of Christian mass, encouraging devotion in children. They also represent what was then a weekly feature of children's lives, attending mass, giving them the opportunity to take on an adult role. These objects moulded from pewter are particularly detailed, although they are not to scale, as the tabernacle is far too small by comparison to the paten; the chalice for wine is also missing from the set. Liturgical toys are quite unusual nowadays, with religion mostly represented in toys through churches in wedding sets.
