This work shows façades of five most famous London department stores: Selfridge's, Fortnum & Mason, Liberty, Harvey Nichols and Harrods, which the characters passed by on their way to the Museum. The artist specialises in illustration of children;s books and draws her inspiration from such 20th century illustrators such as Edward Bawden (1903-1989) and Eric Ravilious (1903-1942) and American lithographed children's books. She typically includes in her work objects found in museums and antique shops. \r\n\r\nThis illustration is characteristic of Emily Sutton's style and technique with the street scenes all imaginatively condensed into a single artistic space. The interest in everyday life and close observation of London's city life was typical of the 20th century British artist Eric Ravilious. It is possible that his series of 24 exquisite lithographs of pre-war shops reproduced in 1938 children's book The Story of High Street, one of the most highly-prized of its time, served as an inspiration for this drawing by E. Sutton.","briefDescription":"Drawing, Illustration for 'Clara Button and the Magical Hat Day', by Amy De La Haye and Emily Sutton, British school, 2011","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[{"text":"London","id":"x28980"}],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[{"text":"Here Emily Sutton has drawn on the work of Czech illustrator Miroslav Sasek (1916-1980), author of the 'This Is' series of children's books.
