Created by Elsie Mills in 1953, Tufty featured in a number of books and safety instructions for the society and in 1961 the Tufty Club was set up as a nationwide network of local groups. At the club meetings, usually once a month, children were told stories, encouraged to join in games, read the Tufty books together and take home the message of road safety. The Tufty Club was a phenomenon, which by 1973 had more than 10 000 affiliated clubs and over two million members.\r\nAlthough Tufty was restylised in 1979, and again in 1993, his presence in RoSPA campaigns has much diminished over the ensuing years. Local Tufty clubs have been wound down and little merchandise is available on their website, but he is still used by the RoSPA in publications and education packs for schools.","physicalDescription":"Plain cotton square with stitched hems, screen printed on one side with an illustrated image of a zebra crossing with Belisha beacons, and two squirrel characters and a weasel character about to cross, with text at the top and bottom.","artistMakerPerson":[],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"RoSPA","id":"A13533"},"association":{"text":"licensee","id":"x32746"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"cotton (textile)","id":"AAT14067"},{"text":"ink","id":"AAT15012"}],"techniques":[{"text":"screen printing","id":"AAT53281"},{"text":"machine stitching","id":"x29587"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Screen printing on cotton.","categories":[{"text":"Children & Childhood","id":"THES48980"},{"text":"Entertainment & Leisure","id":"THES48959"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"YVA","id":"THES48593"},"images":["2025PD8538","2019MD2621"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"001","id":"THES324112"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"handkerchief","id":"AAT216195"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"UK","id":"x29336"},"association":{"text":"printed","id":"x46159"},"note":"probably"}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1970s","earliest":"1970-01-01","latest":"1979-12-31"},"association":{"text":"printed","id":"x46159"},"note":"probably"}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by J M Harvey on behalf of the Theydon Bois Tufty Club","dimensions":[{"dimension":"height","value":"21.4","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"05/01/2012","earliest":"2012-01-05","latest":"2012-01-05"},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"width","value":"21","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"05/01/2012","earliest":"2012-01-05","latest":"2012-01-05"},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"The Tufty Club / Always hold hands.","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":""}],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Cotton handkerchief screen printed on one side with The Tufty Club and illustration of Tufty characters crossing the road.","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"Mass produced","id":"THES48863"},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[{"text":"pedestrian crossings","id":"AAT3838"},{"text":"road safety","id":"THES250522"},{"text":"anthropomorphism","id":"AAT55956"},{"text":"youth clubs","id":"AAT6778"}],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":["Tufty Fluffytail created by Elsie Mills MBE"],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["B.109-2011"],"accessionNumberNum":"109","accessionNumberPrefix":"B","accessionYear":2011,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-04-08","recordCreationDate":"2012-01-05","availableToBook":false}}
