Spilsbury had established his own business selling maps after he finished his apprenticeship in 1760, but did not begin printing his own until 1766, when this puzzle dates from, and a sufficient market had built up for them. They were smaller and simpler than regular commercial maps, meaning they were cheaper to engrave, print and colour. They were intended for a juvenile audience and were purposefully designed for dissections such as these. It was held in Lady Charlotte Finch's puzzle cabinet, in which she kept the dissected map puzzles she had commissioned for the children of George III, in her role as Royal Governess.","physicalDescription":"Engraved map of Scotland ca. 1766, mounted on thin mahogany and cut to shape in 20 pieces.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"John Spilsbury","id":"A34014"},"association":{"text":"engraver","id":"AAT25165"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"paper","id":"x30308"},{"text":"ink","id":"AAT15012"},{"text":"mahogany","id":"AAT12221"}],"techniques":[{"text":"mounting","id":"AAT81370"},{"text":"cutting","id":"AAT53069"},{"text":"engraving","id":"AAT53225"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Engraving mounted on thin mahogany, cut to shape.","categories":[{"text":"Children & Childhood","id":"THES48980"},{"text":"Games","id":"THES48947"},{"text":"Royalty","id":"THES48899"},{"text":"Scotland","id":"THES262877"},{"text":"Education & Learning","id":"THES252542"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"YVA","id":"THES48593"},"images":["2012FR5915"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"013","id":"THES324964"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"puzzle","id":"AAT211207"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"England","id":"x28826"},"association":{"text":"engraved","id":"AAT53225"},"note":""},{"place":{"text":"England","id":"x28826"},"association":{"text":"manufactured","id":"x29350"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1766","earliest":"1761-01-01","latest":"1770-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Presented by Art Fund jointly to the Victoria and Albert Museum and the Historic Royal Palaces","dimensions":[{"dimension":"height","value":"40.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"07/12/2011","earliest":"2011-12-07","latest":"2011-12-07"},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"width","value":"29.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"07/12/2011","earliest":"2011-12-07","latest":"2011-12-07"},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"Lady Charlotte Finch (1725-1813) was governess to the children of King George III for 30 years from 1762-1792.
