In a process pioneered by the artist himself, an ink-soaked brush would be held over the lithographic plate and rubbed against a grid, to produce a fine spray of droplets. The resulting effect could be one of great delicacy, used to add nuanced tones and subtle shading or, when applied with gusto, could create bolder and more dramatic results. For this technique Toulouse-Lautrec took inspiration from a decorative effect employed in Japanese lacquer: urushi or 'sprinkled' lacquer.","physicalDescription":"A woman with long, blonde hair and elbow-length, black gloves clutches her hat as three disembodied hands emerge from the top left corner and shower her with confetti. The poster was commissioned by J & E. Bella, manufacturers of newly invented colour paper confetti. The actress Jeanne Granier posed as the model.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec","id":"A6626"},"association":{"text":"artist","id":"AAT25103"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Imprimerie Bella & de Malherbe","id":"AUTH412990"},"association":{"text":"printers","id":"AAT25732"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"Lithographic ink","id":"AAT187750"},{"text":"Paper","id":"x30308"}],"techniques":[{"text":"lithograph","id":"x35545"},{"text":"planographic","id":"AAT53255"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Colour lithograph","categories":[{"text":"Prints","id":"THES48903"},{"text":"Posters","id":"THES252963"}],"styles":[{"text":"Post-impressionist","id":"AAT21508"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2006BG4693"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"LVLC","id":"THES49171"},"free":"","case":"Y","shelf":"83","box":"E"}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"poster","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Paris","id":"x29068"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1894","earliest":"1894-01-01","latest":"1894-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[{"object":{"text":"E.231-1921","id":"O136807"},"association":"Duplicate"}],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"571","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"2016","earliest":"2016-01-01","latest":"2016-12-31"},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"452","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"2016","earliest":"2016-01-01","latest":"2016-12-31"},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"HTL","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"Signed with monograph, bottom right."},{"content":"Confetti / Manufactured / by, / J & E Bella, / 113 Charing Cross Road. / London / WC.","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"Text of poster."},{"content":"imp, Bella & de Malherbe London & Paris","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"Text on botton right of poster."}],"objectHistory":"This poster was selected as the frontispiece for the poster exhibition of 1894 famed as the one of first of its kind which took place at the Royal Aquarium in London, co-curated by Mr Bella, the maker of this confetti.","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Colour lithograph poster, 'Confetti', by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, French, 1894.","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"Robins, Anna Gruetzner, and Richard Thomson, Degas, Sickert and Toulouse-Lautrec: London and Paris, 1870-1910, London: Tate Britain, 2006.","id":"AUTH349910"},"details":"","free":""},{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Taken from Departmental Circulation Register 1971"},{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"pp. 112-3","free":"Hannah Brocklehurst and Frances Fowle. Pin-ups : Toulouse-Lautrec and the art of celebrity.
