This preliminary watercolour showcases the beautiful tiger lilies surrounding the door frame. The figures have not yet been completed, revealing how key the surroundings were for the end look of each of Beatrix’s illustrations. In fact those in place are not those that feature in the final scene. The completed illustration in the 'little book' is entitled The Veal and Ham Pie and is closer up and face-on.\n\nBeatrix Potter (1866-1943) is one of the world's best-loved children's authors and illustrators. She wrote the majority of the twenty-three original Peter Rabbit books between 1901 and 1913. The Tale of Peter Rabbit (Frederick Warne, 1902) is her most famous and best-loved tale. A large proportion of the drawing is completed in watercolour: the stone frame of the door with a semi-circular design above the door between two pillars, the many orange tiger-lilies depicted to each side of the entrance. The figures inside the doorway are only faintly sketched in in pencil, as is the approaching path.
