Olivia was played by Gwen Cherrell, with Claire Bloom as Viola, John Neville as Orsino, Richard Burton as Sir Toby Belch and Michael Hordern as Malvolio. James Bailey designed the costumes and also the Palladian-inspired architectural setting which was used for all six plays presented in the first season of the Five Year Plan, between September 1953 and May 1954.  For Twelfth Night he adapted his permanent set to suggest an Italian garden. The Elizabethan costumes were based on the miniatures of Isaac Oliver and Nicholas Hilliard. Gerard Fay, writing in the Manchester Guardian (8 January 1954) said that Gwen Cherrell's Olivia 'lives up to the descriptions of her beauty and is dressed superbly'.\n\nJames Bailey's romantic and atmospheric style, influenced by the work of Oliver Messel, made him a much sort-after designer for opera and ballet. His first commission after graduating from the Slade School of Fine Art was to design Giselle at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, in 1946.  He created settings and costumes for Shakespeare productions, notably a 'Victorian' Hamlet at Stratford-upon-Avon in 1948 and As You Like It for Katharine Hepburn in New York in 1950. Ill health caused him to give up his theatre work and from 1960 he concentrated on painting.     \r\n\r\n","physicalDescription":"Costume design for Olivia in Twelfth Night, showing a full-length female figure in a white Elizabethan gown and ruff, the overskirt and bodice decorated with sprigs of flowers.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"James Bailey","id":"A13804"},"association":{"text":"costume designers","id":"AAT163428"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"watercolour","id":"x33202"},{"text":"pencil","id":"x30347"},{"text":"gouache","id":"AAT70114"},{"text":"paper","id":"x30308"}],"techniques":[{"text":"drawing (image-making)","id":"AAT54196"},{"text":"painting (image-making)","id":"AAT54216"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Watercolour, pencil and gouache on paper","categories":[{"text":"Entertainment & Leisure","id":"THES48959"},{"text":"Designs","id":"THES48968"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"T&P","id":"THES48602"},"images":["2011ET5624","2012FE9543"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"007","id":"THES356666"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"costume design","id":"AAT163423"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Great Britain","id":"x32019"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1954","earliest":"1954-01-01","latest":"1954-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"47.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"36.7","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"'Costume for / Olivia / Twelfth Night / Old Vic / 54'","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"Artist's annotation in ink, upper right hand corner."},{"content":"'James Bailey'\r\n\r\n\r\n","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"Artist's signature in ink, lower right hand corner."}],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Costume design by James Bailey for Olivia in William Shakespeare's play Twelfth Night, Old Vic, 6 January 1954.","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":["Twelfth Night"],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["S.1126-2011"],"accessionNumberNum":"1126","accessionNumberPrefix":"S","accessionYear":2011,"otherNumbers":[{"type":{"text":"Previous loan number","id":"THES50326"},"number":"SH.7"}],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2026-02-08","recordCreationDate":"2011-10-20","availableToBook":true}}
