The reviewer of The Birmingham Post, 3 August 1922, noted that, whether as Imogen the girl or disguised as the youth Fidele: 'Miss Ethel Carrington caught the ethereal radiance of this lovely character - the radiance was perhaps a little too pallid, for as Fidele she looked like some Sir Galahad from a window by Burne-Jones with earnest, wistful eyes shadowed by heavy red-gold hair.'\n\nEthel Carrington, born Ethel McDowall, trained at Kate Rorke's School of Acting at the Guildhall and made her first London appearance as Vere Herbert in Henry Hamilton's Moths at the King's Theatre Hammersmith, on 14 October 1907. In 1911 she played Juliet with Frank Benson's Company at Stratford to Murray Carrington's Romeo. They were both members of Benson's Company for several years and during this time they married, but the marriage was later dissolved. \n\nThe artist Eileen Watson was also in Benson's Company at Stratford in 1922 and appeared in the role of a Boy in Sheridan's The Rivals. As a young actress she was apparently a fan of Ethel Carrington and painted this portrait, which she presented to her.","physicalDescription":"Silhouette image of Ethel Carrington in costume as Imogen, looking to her left, wearing a medieval-style floor-length blue overdress over a green underdress, and brown plaited wig circled with foliage. The dress has a yellow cord sash and tight-fitting sleeves fastened with yellow buttons. A portion of the thick blue paint at the shoulder of her right sleeve is absent, as well as a much smaller area on the skirt.\n\nThe portrait is painted on 'Water Colour Sketching Board' made in England by Winsor & Newton Ltd., and is inscribed verso in pencil by the artist Eileen Watson to Ethel Carrington.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Watson, Eileen","id":"AUTH315507"},"association":{"text":"artist","id":"AAT25103"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"gouache","id":"AAT70114"},{"text":"millboard","id":"AAT14233"}],"techniques":[{"text":"painting (image-making)","id":"AAT54216"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Very thickly painted in gouache on watercolour sketching board","categories":[{"text":"Entertainment & Leisure","id":"THES48959"},{"text":"Paintings","id":"THES48917"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"T&P","id":"THES48602"},"images":["2014GX5089"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"008","id":"THES356678"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"painting","id":"x30598"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Stratford-upon-Avon","id":"x33841"},"association":{"text":"painted","id":"x30138"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1922","earliest":"1922-01-01","latest":"1922-12-31"},"association":{"text":"painted","id":"x30138"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by the British Theatre Museum Association","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"19.2","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"13.4","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"'To Miss Carrington / with love from Eileen Watson / Summer Festival 1922 / Stratford on Avon'","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"Inscribed by the artist in pencil on reverse"},{"content":"","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":" ","type":"","note":""}],"objectHistory":"Part of the Murray Carrington - Carmen Pedro Collection, given to the British Theatre Museum Association by Mrs Murrray Carrington (Carmen Pedro) in April 1959.","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Ethel Carrington (1889-1962) as Imogen in Cymbeline by William Shakespeare.
