In this necklace the delicacy of a dragonfly's wing is captured in laser-cut iron. This evocation of extreme fragility in a material noted for its more brutal strength is a pleasing paradox, and one that has required great technical sophistication. A further irony is the use of steel insect pins - more usually used to attach specimens to their boards - which form the delicate circular links between the wings. The piece dwells on nature's transient beauty, starkly modern yet rich with echoes of Japonisme and Art Nouveau.","physicalDescription":"Necklace comprising ten panels of laser-cut iron which replicate the veining of an insect's wings, joined by circular links formed from steel insect pins.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Takeuchi, Mirei","id":"AUTH315230"},"association":{"text":"maker","id":"x40240"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"Iron and steel","categories":[{"text":"Jewellery","id":"THES48930"},{"text":"Metalwork","id":"THES48920"},{"text":"Europeana Fashion Project","id":"THES265804"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"MET","id":"THES48599"},"images":["2011FC6457"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"023","id":"THES407799"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"necklace","id":"AAT46001"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Germany","id":"x28873"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"2010","earliest":"2010-01-01","latest":"2010-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Length","value":"285","unit":"mm","qualifier":"laid as if worn","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"160","unit":"mm","qualifier":"laid as if worn","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Depth","value":"6","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Necklace, iron insect wings, designed and made by Mirei Takeuchi, Germany, 2010.","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["M.225-2011"],"accessionNumberNum":"225","accessionNumberPrefix":"M","accessionYear":2011,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-06-17","recordCreationDate":"2011-07-27","availableToBook":true}}
