The subject is Venus admonishing Cupid, from the story of Cupid and Psyche, as related by the Latin author Lucius Apuleius in the Golden Ass. The V&A has two other tapestries from the set: Venus seeking vengeance on Psyche and Psyche's Punishment in Venus's Service. The story was a favourite pictorial theme during the Renaissance.\r\n\r\nThe tapestry shows Venus reproaching her son, Cupid, for his affair with Psyche. The Goddess is seen entering from the left gesturing forcefully in an accusatory fashion, her billowing drapery accentuating the dynamism of her pose. In contrast, Cupid reclines on a bed with a chastised expression, his hand over his heart and his bow and quiver laid aside. \r\n\r\nThe design for this tapestry, executed by Giovanni Battista Castello (1509-1569), and in the National Galleries of Scotland, shows Venus in a greater state of undress, indicating that when the tapestry came to be woven, the composition was altered to allow an extra fold of fabric to cover her form, resulting in a more modest display.","physicalDescription":"wool and silk on a wool warp:18-20 warps to the inch.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Castello, Giovanni Battista","id":"A17555"},"association":{"text":"designed by","id":"x40048"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"wool","id":"AAT243430"},{"text":"silk (textile)","id":"AAT243428"}],"techniques":[{"text":"weaving","id":"AAT53642"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Tapestry woven in wool and silk","categories":[{"text":"Tapestry","id":"THES48887"},{"text":"Wall coverings","id":"THES48878"},{"text":"Textiles","id":"THES48885"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"T&F","id":"THES48601"},"images":["2006BF2529","2012FF6317","2018LD4270","2018LD4271","2018LD4272","2018LD4273","2018LD4282","2018LD4288","2018LD4289","2018LD4290","2018LD4292","2018LD4293"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"T6 (BH)","id":"THES50141"},"free":"","case":"MB65","shelf":"5","box":"RO532"}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Tapestry","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Brussels","id":"x31976"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":"probably"}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1555-1565","earliest":"1555-01-01","latest":"1565-12-31"},"association":{"text":"designed","id":"x29338"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[{"object":{"text":"T.772-1950","id":"O237598"},"association":"Set"},{"object":{"text":"T.771-1950","id":"O190128"},"association":"Set"}],"creditLine":"Given by Dowager Viscountess Harcourt GBE","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Weight","value":"14","unit":"kg","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"estimated (1msq = 1.2kg)","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"3274","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"16/10/2018","earliest":"2018-10-16","latest":"2018-10-16"},"part":"Top edge","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"3300","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"16/10/2018","earliest":"2018-10-16","latest":"2018-10-16"},"part":"Bottom edge","note":""},{"dimension":"Length","value":"3765","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"16/10/2018","earliest":"2018-10-16","latest":"2018-10-16"},"part":"Proper right","note":""},{"dimension":"Length","value":"3752","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"16/10/2018","earliest":"2018-10-16","latest":"2018-10-16"},"part":"Proper left","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"This tapestry was given to the museum along with several other tapestries, T.767 - T.775-1950, by the Dowager Viscountess Harcourt, G.B.E.
