This custom, popular in Elizabethan Britain, was revived from 1750-1800 following fashions in continental Europe. Elaborate designs such as formal gardens, temples, obelisks, ornamental fencing and trellis work were all popular, particularly for the dessert course. The confectioner used pastes made of sugar, gum, starch or rice flour to make the ornaments from wooden moulds, such as this one. The robust construction of the mould meant that it could be used over and over again. Many of the designs for centrepieces and ornaments used in Britain were influenced by France and this mould is incised with a French name, Guichard, who may have been an ornament maker. W. Squire, whose name is also incised on the mould, may have been in the trade as well.","physicalDescription":"The mould is flat and tapers slightly towards one end. On one side the neo-classical patterns consist of a pyramid and pedestal, with drops of bell flowers either side, above a pair of gryphons. On the right of the pyramid two names are incised: GUICHARD.    W.SQUIRE\r\nOn the other side the upper part of the mould, tapering towards the narrower end, has patterns for a ladder, two different types of railing, and two mouldings. Separating the upper and lower part of the mould is a motif composed of an arrow point, crescent and disc. The lower half of the mould is carved with a foliate spray, lines of crescent moons and mouldings, three with pendants, and a trellis pattern with central motif.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"Pearwood","id":"x34734"}],"techniques":[{"text":"Carving","id":"AAT53149"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Pear wood, carved and incised","categories":[{"text":"Woodwork","id":"THES48877"},{"text":"Eating","id":"THES48963"}],"styles":[{"text":"Neo-classicism","id":"x38958"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"FWK","id":"THES48597"},"images":["2006AA6511","2006AA6507","2017JT8012"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"006","id":"THES299227"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Mould","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Europe","id":"x28842"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1770-1800","earliest":"1770-01-01","latest":"1800-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by Mrs. Edward Holland Martin","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Length","value":"56","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"12","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Depth","value":"2","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"Guichard","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"Stamped along the side of the decorative carving"},{"content":"W.SQUIRE","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"Stamped alongside the decorative carving"}],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Pear wood mould, for table decorations, with neo-classical decoration, to form one side of an obelisk","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["W.11-1949"],"accessionNumberNum":"11","accessionNumberPrefix":"W","accessionYear":1949,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2026-05-18","recordCreationDate":"2006-05-08","availableToBook":false}}
