In 1835 he entered the Royal Academy Schools but was rarely there, preferring instead to learn from his own studies of objects such as the Elgin Marbles. \r\n\r\nDespite being a successful history painter, Watts is best known for his portraits. He painted many of the notable figures of his day including William Morris and Cardinal Manning. He travelled widely and exhibiting abroad, on the Continent and in New York, helped establish his reputation as a prominent artist. Watts was elected ARA early in 1867 and then RA later the same year.\r\n\r\nThis portrait was one of around ten portraits by Watts of various members of the Ionides family. Constantine Alexander Ionides was a keen collector of art and when he died in 1900 he bequeathed over a thousand paintings, drawings and prints to the Victoria and Albert Museum. This particular painting of his grandmother Mary is one of a group of 20 family portraits which, while part of the original bequest, did not come to the museum until the death of his widow in 1920.","physicalDescription":"Half-length, full face portrait of an elderly lady with brown hair and eyes, seated with hands joined on her lap facing the viewer. She has a wart on the forehead. She wears a red and green turban, a green bodice edged with brown fur (the fur collar is partly covered by a lace one), and a striped red and brown skirt. Behind her to the left is the back of a crimson armchair; above is a dark red curtain.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Watts, George Frederick (OM, RA)","id":"A9772"},"association":{"text":"artist","id":"AAT25103"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"oil paint","id":"AAT15050"},{"text":"canvas","id":"AAT14078"}],"techniques":[{"text":"oil painting","id":"AAT178684"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Oil on canvas","categories":[{"text":"Paintings","id":"THES48917"},{"text":"Portraits","id":"THES48906"}],"styles":[{"text":"Victorian","id":"x29321"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2014HG8132","2014HG8128","2017JV6754"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"A","id":"THES304244"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"oil paintings","id":"AAT33799"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Great Britain","id":"x32019"},"association":{"text":"painted","id":"x30138"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1842","earliest":"1842-01-01","latest":"1842-12-31"},"association":{"text":"painted","id":"x30138"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Bequeathed by Constantine Alexander Ionides","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"36.125","unit":"in","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"estimate","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"27.875","unit":"in","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"estimate","note":""},{"dimension":"","value":"","unit":"","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":"Measurement taken at time of assessment prior to BH decant - Frame Dimensions (mm): H-1210 W-1080 D-100;\nPainting Dimensions (mm): not measured"}],"dimensionsNote":"Dimensions taken from <i>Summary catalogue of British Paintings</i>, Victoria and Albert Museum, 1973","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"G F Watts","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"inscribed on back"}],"objectHistory":"Bequeathed by Constantine Alexander Ionides, 1900.
