The elements of the chair are cut from MDF (medium density fibreboard), a ubiquitous modern construction material, using a laser cutter. The cutter is controlled by computer, ensuring a perfect reproduction of the design with each chair. However, the decoration derives from a simple paper cut, made by folding and snipping a piece of paper, and the laser faithfully reproduces the flaws and inaccuracies of the design, diminishing the technological character of the chair and suggesting hand craftsmanship. Furthermore, the decoration consciously evokes vernacular or folk design in a bid to reconnect with tradition and history, even though the chair is made using modern means and materials. The laser beam scorches the MDF as it cuts it, but the designer has chosed self-coloured black MDF for the chair to disguise this. The chair is produced in batches by the designer.","physicalDescription":"A high backed chair without arms constructed of cut and shaped panels of black MDF with pierced decoration.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Hans, Ineke","id":"A17498"},"association":{"text":"designer","id":"x36960"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Ineke Hans Collection","id":"A17501"},"association":{"text":"manufacturer","id":"x33306"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"MDF","id":"x34484"}],"techniques":[{"text":"laser cutting","id":"x39177"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Laser cut MDF","categories":[{"text":"Furniture","id":"THES48948"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"FWK","id":"THES48597"},"images":["2008BT7434","2008BT7435"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"CA001","id":"THES388376"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Chair","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Arnhem","id":"x39733"},"association":{"text":"designed","id":"x29338"},"note":""},{"place":{"text":"Arnhem","id":"x39733"},"association":{"text":"manufactured","id":"x29350"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"2002","earliest":"2002-01-01","latest":"2002-12-31"},"association":{"text":"designed","id":"x29338"},"note":""},{"date":{"text":"2006","earliest":"2006-01-01","latest":"2006-12-31"},"association":{"text":"manufactured","id":"x29350"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by Ineke Hans","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"66","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"78","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Depth","value":"76","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Weight","value":"5","unit":"kg","qualifier":"nifill","date":{"text":"11/03/2022","earliest":"2022-03-11","latest":"2022-03-11"},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"An example of the Laser Chair was exhibited in 'Milan in a Van' at the V&A 21 April - 9 June 2002.","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Chair, 'Laser Chair', designed by Ineke Hans, laser cut MDF, 2002","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Hinte, E. van and Hans, I., 'Black Bazaar: design dilemmas', 010- Publishers, Rotterdam, 2003"}],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[{"text":"furniture","id":"AAT37680"},{"text":"","id":""},{"text":"chair","id":"AAT37772"},{"text":"laser cutting","id":"x39177"}],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[{"text":"103-106\r\n\r\nLASER CHAIR\r\nDesigned by Ineke Hans (Dutch, born 1966), 2002\r\nMade by Ineke Hans Collection, 2006\r\nLaser cut MDF\r\nDutch\r\n\r\nThe decoration and structure of this chair consciously evoke folk art in a bid to connect modernity with tradition.
