Naval power helped enlarge Britain’s trading and colonial empire and this bowl records some of her military conquests: Fort St. Louis (Senegal) and Louisbourg (Cape Breton, Canada) in 1758 and Guadeloupe (West Indies) in 1759. The harbour mouth scene of Senegal shown inside the bowl depicts it as a European port, perhaps an attempt by the designer to make the remote location seem familiar to patriotic British customers.\r\n\r\nThe bowl was produced at Worcester using transfer-printing technology developed by John Sadler, a newspaper proprietor in Liverpool. Sadler’s patent application of 1756 for applying overglaze printing to ceramics established a cheap and efficient means of producing printed ceramics.","physicalDescription":"Shallow porcelain bowl, transfer-printed in black, with maritime scenes.
