It has become a popular subject for artistic interpretation as it combines the dramatic themes of love and betrayal. Samson, the Jewish hero, fell in love with Delila who is bribed by the philistines to betray hime into their hands. She discovers that his incredible strength comes from his uncut hair whereupon she arranges for it to be cut whilst he sleeps. Samson, drained of his strength, is thus captured by the Philistines  This painting is a copy after a work by Anthony Van Dyck and depicts the moment immediately before Samson's hair is shorn. Van Dyck's picture was probably painted about1619-20, while he was working in the studio of Peter Paul Rubens. The composition derives from Rubens's treatment of the subject in the National Gallery, London of about1609, but the composition is reversed and is therefore probably taken from the print by Jacob Matham.","physicalDescription":"Oil on canvas; scene of Samson with his head in the lap of Delilah having his hair cut by the philistines - a man stands above him brandishing a pair of scissors whilst two figures peer over Delilah's shoulder and soldiers wait behind a pillar on the far left.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Hilton, William (II)","id":"A17459"},"association":{"text":"artist","id":"AAT25103"},"note":""},{"name":{"text":"Van Dyck","id":"A8938"},"association":{"text":"After","id":"THES283471"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"Oil","id":"AAT14254"},{"text":"Canvas","id":"AAT14078"}],"techniques":[{"text":"oil painting","id":"AAT178684"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Oil on canvas","categories":[{"text":"Paintings","id":"THES48917"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2007BP0900","2018KX5176"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"A","id":"THES304416"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"oil paintings","id":"AAT33799"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Great Britain","id":"x32019"},"association":{"text":"painted","id":"x30138"},"note":"probably"}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1810-1830","earliest":"1805-01-01","latest":"1830-12-31"},"association":{"text":"painted","id":"x30138"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by Helen Tatlock","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"52.5","unit":"in","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"estimate","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"78","unit":"in","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"estimate","note":""},{"dimension":"","value":"","unit":"","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":"Measurement taken at time of assessment prior to BH decant - Frame Dimensions (mm): H-1370 W-2225 D-95;\nPainting Dimensions (mm): not measured"}],"dimensionsNote":"Dimensions taken from <i>Summary catalogue of British Paintings</i>, Victoria and Albert Museum, 1973","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Given by Helen Tatlock, 1872","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Oil on canvas, 'Samson and Delilah', William Hilton RA (after Van Dyck), ca. 1810-1830","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[{"text":"Samson","id":"N654"},{"text":"Delilah","id":"N584"}],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["257-1872"],"accessionNumberNum":"257","accessionNumberPrefix":"","accessionYear":1872,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-04-05","recordCreationDate":"2006-04-20","availableToBook":true}}
