In this technique, the design is formed from small metal (here brass wire) enclosures or ‘cloisons’ fixed to the body of the piece and filled with coloured enamel paste which is then fired and polished. \r\n\r\nHere the transparent brown enamel ground almost disappears beneath stylised clouds, Japanese cranes, chrysanthemums and pine-boughs. The cranes and pines are both symbols of longevity. The rims and foot-rings of gilded copper are still visible. \r\n\r\nThe style of decoration and the enamelling technique are characteristic of the early work of the Kyoto-based cloisonné artist Namikawa Yasuyuki. Hayashi Tadamasa (1853-1906) was the first to suggest a possible Kyoto origin when he visited the V&A in 1886 to assess the Museum's Japanese collections. Hayashi had studied at what is now Tokyo University and in 1878 served as an interpreter at the Paris Exposition. He stayed on in Europe and became a significant dealer and advisor on Japanese art. These two small vases are stylistically very similar to another pair in the V&A (Museum nos 1274&A-1886).","physicalDescription":"Copper vase decorated with brass wires and cloisonné enamels","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Namikawa Yasuyuki","id":"A3767"},"association":{"text":"maker","id":"AAT251917"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"copper","id":"AAT11020"}],"techniques":[{"text":"cloisonné","id":"AAT53778"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Copper, brass and cloisonné enamel","categories":[{"text":"Vases","id":"THES48879"}],"styles":[{"text":"Meiji","id":"AAT18567"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"EAS","id":"THES48596"},"images":["2006AC8432","2006AC5439"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"004","id":"THES363968"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Vase","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Japan","id":"x29399"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""},{"place":{"text":"Kyoto","id":"x31966"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1870-1880","earliest":"1870-01-01","latest":"1880-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[{"object":{"text":"360-1880","id":"O119889"},"association":"Pair"}],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"8.6","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Purchased from Londos & Co., accessioned in 1880.
