The success of their affordable, youthful designs enabled them to open a small shop in Abingdon Road in Kensington the following year. Many of London’s fashionable new boutiques catered only for well-off customers (Mary Quant’s Bazaar, for example), but Biba attracted glamorous pop stars, bohemian aristocrats and impoverished students alike. \r\n\r\nBy 1971 the Biba boutique had grown into a large store stocking a wide range of Biba merchandise. There were separate departments for menswear, childrenswear and household accessories. Barbara Hulanicki designed all the clothes and retained control of the colour co-ordination of all other products. This dress, with its swirling paisley design, is typical of the palette used for Biba's 'Granny' prints.","physicalDescription":"Dress and pinafore in paisely-printed Viyella","artistMakerPerson":[],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Biba","id":"A2908"},"association":{"text":"maker","id":"AAT251917"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"viyella","id":"x46545"}],"techniques":[{"text":"printing","id":"AAT53319"},{"text":"sewing","id":"AAT53658"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Printed Viyella","categories":[{"text":"Day wear","id":"THES49000"},{"text":"Fashion","id":"THES48957"},{"text":"Womenswear","id":"THES49044"},{"text":"Europeana Fashion Project","id":"THES265804"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"T&F","id":"THES48601"},"images":["2006BK8597"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"010","id":"THES307488"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"010","id":"THES307488"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Dress","id":""}],[{"text":"Pinafore top","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Great Britain","id":"x32019"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1971","earliest":"1971-01-01","latest":"1971-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by Suzanne Pegley","dimensions":[],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Registered File number 1992/1487.","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Paisley dress and pinafore, Biba, Great Britain, 1971.","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[{"text":"paisley","id":"x35697"}],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["T.472-1993","T.473-1993"],"accessionNumberNum":"472","accessionNumberPrefix":"T","accessionYear":1993,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE","Dress","Pinafore top"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2026-03-10","recordCreationDate":"2006-04-12","availableToBook":true}}
