The classical tradition survived relatively unaltered at the Berlin factory because of the persisting influence of the neo-classical architect, Schinkel, and his pupils; it was criticised at the 1855 and 1867 Paris exhibitions. This vase is neo-classical in form and subject, but the handles, with spiky, acanthus-winged griffons are borrowed from Renaissance grotesques.
