It appears to have been drawn from a model, who was identified in the <i> Art Journal,</i> orbituary as the miniature painter Anthony Stewart (1773-1846). It may be compared with the 1812 portrait of him by Andrew Gedddes, now in the Scottish National Portrait Gallery and also with his miniature self portait in the V&A, Museum Number: P.2-1967.  \r\n\r\nMargaret Sarah Carpenter was a very popular portrait painter.
