Born in 1804, he studied stoneware-making in Germany; he was a painter, curator of the museum at Dijon, and author of a book on the principles of beauty in ceramics, architecture and forms in general. He founded his factory near Beauvais in 1839, and made dark stoneware in archaic shapes and decorated with relief ornament.
