He moved to Paris in about 1851 as overseer for the Dumas stove and tile firm, and in 1855 opened his own studio and, later his own retail shop, with his brother Xavier. Deck specialised in researching glazes and colours inspired by the ceramics of the Middle and Far East and he made earthenware in many of these styles including Persian and Chinese as well as imitations of <i>cloisonné</i> enamels and 'Rhodian-ware'. In 1887, only three years before his death, he became Director of the National Manufactory at Sèvres.","physicalDescription":"Vase in the form of a waisted Mamluk mosque lamp, white earthenware with moulded decoration of flowers, bands of scrolling foliage and medallions, infilled with orange-red pigment under a clear glaze.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Deck, Joseph-Théodore","id":"A2115"},"association":{"text":"designer and maker","id":"x34662"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"earthenware","id":"x29356"}],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"Thrown white earthenware, moulded with floral decoration in a piece-mould and infilled with orange-red pigment under a clear glaze","categories":[{"text":"Ceramics","id":"THES48982"},{"text":"Art Pottery","id":"THES49021"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"CER","id":"THES48594"},"images":["2007BM6527","2007BM6526"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"139","id":"THES49874"},"free":"","case":"36","shelf":"7","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Vase","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Paris","id":"x29068"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1867","earliest":"1862-01-01","latest":"1871-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"36","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"'THD' in monogram","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"Impressed and coloured red"}],"objectHistory":"Purchased from Deck and shown in the Paris international exhibition of 1867","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Vase in the form of a mosque lamp, earthenware, moulded, with underglaze pigment, designed and made by Joseph-Théodore Deck, Paris, France, 1867","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Paris: <-u>Reports on the Paris Universal Exhibition</u> 1867, vol.ii, London, 1868, p.398\r\nAslin, E.A: <-u> French Exhibition Pieces 1844-78</-u> VAM, 1973, pl. 25\r\nCollinot E & Adalbert de Beaumont: <-u>Recueil de dessins pour l'Art et 'Industrie Graves par E Collinot & Adalbert de Beaumont</-u>, 1859, pl.58, 73\r\nSee Ceramics & Glass Section Object Information file"}],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[{"text":"Label for 'American and European Art and Design 1800-1900', Gallery 101, de-canted March 2017:\r\n\r\n'13\r\nVase in the Shape of a Mosque Lamp\r\nAbout 1867\r\nShown at the International Exhibition\r\nParis, 1867\r\n\r\nDeck started his career with an apprenticeship in a ceramic stove factory in Strasburg.
