Dresden was an important centre for porcelain production and decoration in the late 19th century in response to the rise of Romanticism.\r\n\r\nDresden china has been described as the 'rococo revival' style. Called 'rococo' after the French word 'rocaille', the style was inspired by the decoration of artificial grottoes or rock work in French gardens. Characterised by the shape and swirling lines on the base of this figurine, the style also suited ornately decorated figurines such as this. The maker of this figurine has also taken obvious pride in reproducing the intricate lacy jabot and cuffs in porcelain.","physicalDescription":"Figurine of a male figure in a white periwig, standing with his left foot in front of his right foot on a rococo-style base decorated with gold lines. He wears a mauve frock coat with a frilled jabot and cuffs, a yellow waistcoat, black knee breeches, white stockings and black shoes, and holds a black hat in his right hand.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"makers","id":"AAT251917"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"porcelain","id":"AAT10662"},{"text":"glaze","id":"AAT15091"}],"techniques":[{"text":"moulding","id":"x46876"},{"text":"firing (heating)","id":"AAT53887"},{"text":"painting","id":"x30598"},{"text":"glazing (coating)","id":"AAT53914"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Glazed porcelain","categories":[{"text":"Figures & Decorative ceramics","id":"THES48954"},{"text":"Entertainment & Leisure","id":"THES48959"},{"text":"Ceramics","id":"THES48982"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"T&P","id":"THES48602"},"images":["2006AB9169"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"003","id":"THES355436"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"figurines","id":"AAT47455"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Dresden","id":"x28810"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"late 19th century","earliest":"1850-01-01","latest":"1900-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Accepted by HM Government in lieu of Inheritance Tax and allocated to the Victoria and Albert Museum, 1996","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"12.8","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"9.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Depth","value":"5.0","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"of base","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"4.8","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"of base","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"A blue crown, and the words 'Ludwig' / 'Made in Germany' / 'Dresden' / 'Dec', and the initiald 'uf' or 'lf''.","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"On base"}],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Figurine of male character dressed in 17th century dress, possibly a theatrical character called Ludwig.
