This plate dates from around 1785. Its form suggests that it was made at the Lambeth High Street pottery, then under the management of Thomas Morgan and Abigail Griffith. It has been painted by an accomplished hand in the manner of contemporary porcelain decoration. The enamelling would have been added elsewhere, probably in one of the London decorating workshops, not at the factory. Plates of this type survive with an inscription indicating they were enamelled by the Lowestoft painter Thomas Curtis in 1775, but these are in a completely different style.\n\nThe plate was included in the catalogue of English Pottery and related works of art compiled by Jonathan Horne, issued by the dealers Sampson & Horne in 2009, in which its provenance is stated as C.N. Barlow Collection. The plate was acquired from Sampson & Horne by Sir Harry Djanogly and donated to the Museum.","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Plate, tin-glazed earthenware painted in enamels, manufactured by Lambeth High Street pottery, London (Lambeth High Street), decorated elsewhere, about 1785.","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"English Pottery and related works of art compiled by Jonathan Horne.
