His work spans conceptualism, minimalism and pop, without being easily categorised. He has a long-standing interest in drawing and has curated exhibitions including Drawing the Line (Whitechapel Art Gallery, 1995). \r\n\r\nEarly in his career Craig-Martin's intention was, as far as possible, to remove self-expression from his drawings, and to achieve this he replaced pen and pencil with thin, flexible adhesive tape.\r\n\r\nProposal (bulb and watch) is part of Craig-Martin's extended enquiry into the nature of line which began in the 1960s. It was made in 1992, the cusp of the YBA (Young British Artist) period which was led by his former students. The drawing simplifies and refines a pair of ordinary objects to their schematic outlines, exploring conventions of representation.","physicalDescription":"Drawing in black and red tape on film, of a wristwatch and lightbulb.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Craig-Martin, Michael (Prof. Sir)","id":"AUTH341792"},"association":{"text":"artist","id":"AAT25103"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"tape","id":"AAT14685"},{"text":"drafting film","id":"x44978"}],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"","categories":[{"text":"Drawings","id":"THES48966"}],"styles":[{"text":"British","id":"AAT111159"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2024NU9381","2011EW7075"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"WS","id":"THES49603"},"free":"","case":"R","shelf":"78","box":"R"}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"drawing","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"No","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1992","earliest":"1992-01-01","latest":"1992-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"41.3","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"43.7","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Height","value":"452","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"frame","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"432","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"frame","note":""},{"dimension":"Depth","value":"40","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"frame","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"Signed and dated in pencil bottom right","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":""}],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Drawing, 'Proposal (bulb and watch)' in black and red tape on drafting film, by Michael Craig-Martin, 1992.","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Owens, Susan, The Art of Drawing British Masters and Methods since 1600, V&A Publishing, London, 2013, p. 186, fig. 148"}],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[{"text":"light bulb","id":"x47978"},{"text":"wrist watches","id":"AAT205438"}],"contentConcepts":[{"text":"pop art","id":"x47977"}],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[{"text":"MICHAEL CRAIG-MARTIN (BORN 1941) \r\nDRAWING: ‘PROPOSAL: BULB AND WATCH’ \r\n1992 \r\n\r\nMichael Craig-Martin has said that ‘art always involves looking at something familiar as though it were unfamiliar’. In this drawing the very ordinariness of the bulb and watch focuses our attention on the extraordinary way they are represented – in schematic outline, and as though they are the same size. The ‘proposal’ of the title subtly draws our attention to the conventions and distortions inherent in artistic representation. \r\n\r\nLondon\r\nBlack and red tape on drafting film \r\nPurchased from the Alan Cristea Gallery \r\nMuseum no.
