He produced a vast body of work. Topolski was an official war artist in 1940-45, a book illustrator, a painter of intimate portraits and huge murals, and was famous as a recorder of contemporary life and events. <i>Chronicles</i>, a self-published broadsheet of sketches and commentary on any subject that caught his attention, appeared fortnightly from 1953 until 1982 and totals over 2300 drawings. Topolski worked quickly, his subjects depicted in an artist’s shorthand of swirling lines and splashes of colour that captured the immediacy of the moment.
