It is one of the earliest pieces of silver made by the silversmith Edward Farrell. The design is largely based on that of late 17th century German tankards but is more eclectic incorporating neoclassical and baroque stylistic elements. The frieze of the gods on Mount Olympus is Neoclassical in execution and subject matter whereas the heavy, exuberant decoration on the base, handle and cover of the tankard owes much to the Baroque.","physicalDescription":"Cylindrical tankard, the base with applied grapevine and dolphin feet, the body cast and chased with mythological scenes of Mount Olympus, the handle decorated with grapevine and bacchanalian figures, the domed, hinged cover with cast and chased putti and the finial in the shape of a putti.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Edward Farrell","id":"A6002"},"association":{"text":"maker","id":"AAT251917"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"silver","id":"AAT11029"},{"text":"gold","id":"AAT11021"}],"techniques":[{"text":"gilding","id":"AAT53789"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Silver-gilt","categories":[{"text":"Metalwork","id":"THES48920"},{"text":"Drinking","id":"THES48965"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"MET","id":"THES48599"},"images":["2010EM3904","2010EM3901"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"67","id":"THES49731"},"free":"","case":"2","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Tankard","id":"AAT43256"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"London","id":"x28980"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1817-1818","earliest":"1817-05-29","latest":"1818-05-28"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by the A.H.
