In addition to the significant choice of silver as material for the case - as opposed to the less expensive wood or base metal - the lid is engraved with an elaborate scene celebrating Emperor Leopold I (1640-1705). He is shown at the centre of the engraving, sitting in state, and is surrounded by representatives of the electors who gave him legitimacy as emperor.\r\n\r\nThis object was purchased in 2011 for the Gilbert Collection on loan to the Victoria and Albert Museum. Sir Arthur Gilbert and his wife Rosalinde formed one of the world's great decorative art collections, including silver, mosaics, enamelled portrait miniatures and gold boxes. Arthur Gilbert donated his extraordinary collection to Britain in 1996. The collection is administered by the Gilbert Trust for the Arts.","physicalDescription":"Circular seal case with liner and lid, silver, the lid engraved with scene of Emperor Leopold I sitting in state below the arms of Austria surrounded by representatives of the seven electors; the case contains a circular yellow and red wax seal with the Imperial double eagle, partly highlighted in gold","artistMakerPerson":[],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"silver, wax","categories":[{"text":"Containers","id":"THES48972"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"MET","id":"THES48599"},"images":["2012FG7844","2012FG7845","2012FG7852"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"72A","id":"THES413998"},"free":"","case":"CA009","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"015","id":"THES410185"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"015","id":"THES410185"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"72A","id":"THES413998"},"free":"","case":"CA009","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"72A","id":"THES413998"},"free":"","case":"CA009","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"seal case","id":""}],[{"text":"lid","id":""}],[{"text":"seal","id":""}],[{"text":"liner","id":""}],[{"text":"fragment","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Germany","id":"x28873"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"circa 1686-1692","earliest":"1681-01-01","latest":"1692-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"The Rosalinde and Arthur Gilbert Collection on loan to the Victoria and Albert Museum, London","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Diameter","value":"17","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"20/12/23","earliest":"2023-12-20","latest":"2023-12-20"},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Height","value":"4.2","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"20/12/23","earliest":"2023-12-20","latest":"2023-12-20"},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"Measured by Issy Warnham 20/12/23","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Provenance: Private collection; Sotheby's Paris, auction PF1102, 17 May 2011, lot 239; S.J.
