Bowl and cover\r\n1755-1757\r\nhard-paste porcelain painted in colours and gold\r\nh 13 cm; width 16 cm\r\nno mark\r\ninv. C.569&A-1925\r\npurchase: A. Spero, £ 20\r\nThis bowl is painted on one side and on the cover with red and green flowers and insects and, on the other side, with the coat-of-arms of Captain Augustus Hervey painted in red, purple and gold. Beneath the arms there is a white ribbon with the motto of the Hervey family “ON OUBLIERAY JAMAIS”. This bowl, which is missing the matching plate that goes underneath it, like the Stoppani coffee pot (cat. 8) is an excellent example of the porcelain being manufactured by Ginori at the end of the First Period, which had achieved such a superb quality in its decorations that it was being ordered by customers outside of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany. In fact, the coat-of arms that appears on this bowl is that of Captain Augustus Hervey of Bristol who met Carlo Ginori in 1753 in Livorno where Ginori had been appointed governor in 1746. Augustus Hervey, was the son of the second Earl Hervey and Mary Leppell, and had a brilliant career in the British navy. Hervey mentioned this meeting in the diary he wrote from1746 to 1759 in which he states that on June 10th 1753 he met the Governor of Livorno (A. d’Agliano, in BAROQUE LUXURY PORCELAIN 2005, p. 289, cat. 114 and ERSKINE 1953, p. 145; also See MANNERS 2007, p. 450-451).Many years later, in 1868 the third Marquis of Bristol, Frederick William Hervey, bought an important set of 18th-century Ginori porcelain which was sold to him as Capodimonte and is still in the family residence in Ickworth, Suffolk (WINTER 2008, p. 12-39).\r\nA. d’A.\r\nBibliography: LANE 1954, p. 35, plate 49a; A.\r\nd’Agliano, in BAROQUE LUXURY PORCELAIN 2005, p.\r\n289, cat. 114; MANNERS 2007, p. 451, fig. 55g\r\n"}],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[{"text":"arms","id":"AAT126352"},{"text":"flowers","id":"x35571"},{"text":"insects","id":"x30217"}],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[{"text":"BOWL AND COVER\r\nPorcelain\r\nThe Arms and motto of Hervey, Earls of Bristol,\r\nprobably made for George William Hervey (second Earl)\r\nwhile envoy at Turin 1755-58\r\nITALY (DOCCIA); about 1755-58\r\nC.569 & A-1925\r\n(Label draft attributed to John V.
