In this technique tiny sections of cloth are bound with thread prior to being dyed. The colour does not penetrate the protected areas. After the dye is dry the binding is carefully removed. Shibori was costly and labour intensive and was usually combined with embroidery as in this kimono. The dense pattern of peonies, chrysanthemums and hollyhocks combined with a key fret pattern is characteristic of kimono worn by women of samurai families. The samurai were the ruling military class of Japan in the Edo period (1615-1868).","physicalDescription":"Kimono of red silk crêpe (chirimen) with tie-dyeing (shibori) and embroidery in coloured silk and metallic threads of peonies, leaves and ribbons on a fretwork ground.\r\n\r\nThe kimono is straight cut with square sleeves, and is lined with orange red silk.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"silk (textile)","id":"AAT243428"},{"text":"crêpe","id":"AAT183741"}],"techniques":[{"text":"resist dyeing","id":"AAT53053"},{"text":"embroidering","id":"AAT53653"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Silk crêpe, resist dyeing and embroidery ","categories":[{"text":"Textiles","id":"THES48885"},{"text":"Clothing","id":"THES48975"},{"text":"Embroidery","id":"THES48960"}],"styles":[{"text":"Edo period","id":"AAT106643"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"EAS","id":"THES48596"},"images":["2006BK5193","2024NX3135","2006AN1532","2017KJ7369","2017KJ7370","2017KJ7371","2017KJ7373","2017KJ7376","2017KJ7377","2017KJ7378","2017KJ7403","2017KJ7404"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"005","id":"THES404738"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Kimono","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"No","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Japan","id":"x29399"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1800-1850","earliest":"1800-01-01","latest":"1850-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Hart Gift","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Length","value":"155","unit":"cm","qualifier":"Maximum","date":{"text":"11/06/2024","earliest":"2024-06-11","latest":"2024-06-11"},"part":"Top of shoulder to hem ","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"128","unit":"cm","qualifier":"Maximum","date":{"text":"11/06/2024","earliest":"2024-06-11","latest":"2024-06-11"},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"Measured by conservation","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Kimono of embroidered and resist dyed silk crêpe, Japan, 1800-1850","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[{"text":"Peonies","id":"x35844"}],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["T.109-1954"],"accessionNumberNum":"109","accessionNumberPrefix":"T","accessionYear":1954,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2026-04-27","recordCreationDate":"2006-02-28","availableToBook":false}}
