Inasayama of the title is to the right of the picture. For the majority of the Edo period (1615-1868), Japan pursued a policy of <i>sakoku</i> ('closed country'). Japanese were not allowed to travel abroad, and visitors to Japan were limited. Only the Dutch and the Chinese were allowed to trade with Japan, from their bases in Nagasaki.
