This coincided with developments in wood-block printing and resulted in the emergence of a genre of prints known as kodomo-e (literally, 'children pictures'). The term refers specifically to images of children - usually at play - but it is also an umbrella term for images of children with their mothers (oyako-e), and those made as toys for the amusement of children (omocha-e).\r\n\r\nKittagawa Utamaro (died 1806) is best known for his prints of beautiful women, but he was also one of a number of important print designers of the Edo period who turned their hand to kodomo-e. In this example, a young girl holds up a goldfish in a bowl, distracting a mother from bathing her baby. The title of the series refers to the ninth-century poetess Ono no Komachi, whose name became a byword for fashionable beauties in the Edo period.","physicalDescription":"Woodblock print.
