Nash was one of the more prolific artists working with this medium, whereby a picture is made by printing from a flat surface (traditionally stone, now often a metal plate), on which the artist draws or paints the original design with a greasy substance. The surface is then prepared, moistened and inked; the greasy printing ink adheres to the design, which is then printed onto a sheet of paper. \r\n\r\nThis view of the colonial exhibits shows that, as well as works of art and manufacture, a large number of natural resources were on display at the Great Exhibition of 1851, including minerals, fruits and vegetables. The aim was to impress the visitor by with the quality of colonial produce. The comparatively few artefacts on display emphasised the importance of these countries to Britain as sources of raw materials and as new markets for their own manufactured goods. The official catalogue described Australia, for example, as ‘the most extensive wool-producing country in the world’, with valuable exports to Britain. This print shows the Greek pavilion, with a national costume on display in a glass case.","physicalDescription":"A print showing a view of the Great Exhibition, with a view into the Greek pavilion and exhibition visitors, flags and the upper balcony.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Nash, Joseph","id":"A8688"},"association":{"text":"artist","id":"AAT25103"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Dickinson Brothers","id":"A9089"},"association":{"text":"publisher","id":"x32600"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[],"techniques":[{"text":"lithography","id":"AAT53271"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Lithograph on paper with watercolour","categories":[{"text":"Prints","id":"THES48903"},{"text":"British Galleries","id":"THES48985"},{"text":"Great Exhibition","id":"THES48945"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2006AX7800"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"122F (VA)","id":"THES49220"},"free":"","case":"WN","shelf":"","box":"6"}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"print","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"London","id":"x28980"},"association":{"text":"published","id":"x30682"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1854","earliest":"1854-01-01","latest":"1854-12-31"},"association":{"text":"published","id":"x30682"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"33.4","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"image size","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"48.8","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"image size","note":""},{"dimension":"Height","value":"44","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"sheet size","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"59.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"sheet size","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"Greece\r\nDickinson Bros 114 New Bond Street","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":""}],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"View of the Greek pavilion at the Great Exhibition, lithograph, British, 1854","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"From <i>Dickinson's Comprehensive Pictures of the Great Exhibition of 1851</i>","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[{"text":"Crystal Palace","id":"x32313"}],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[{"text":"Great Exhibition of the Works of Industry of all Nations","id":"V11"}],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[{"text":"flags","id":"AAT195678"}],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["19537:1"],"accessionNumberNum":"19537","accessionNumberPrefix":"","accessionYear":null,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":["2019LN5254","2019LT2836","2019LU9456"],"recordModificationDate":"2025-08-26","recordCreationDate":"2006-02-24","availableToBook":false}}
