In January 1855 he enrolled as a student at the Trustees' Academy where he was a pupil of Robert Scott Lauder (1803-1869).  Fellow students under Lauder included William McTaggart, William Quiller Orchardson, John Pettie, and George Paul Chalmers.\r\n\r\nFrom the age of twenty Graham undertook a  series of trips abroad, often in the company of those he had studied with at the Trustee’s Academy.  However, in contrast to the more historicist genre work produced by his friends, Graham deliberately chose modern subjects for his paintings.  This painting is a good example of the intimate nature of Graham's work, created by a relatively small scale, showing attention to detail and using subtle gradations of light and shade.\r\n\r\nGraham first exhibited at the Scottish Academy in 1859 and continued to do so regularly from 1867.  In 1883 he was elected an honorary member of the Royal Scottish Academy.  He also showed at the British Institution and the Royal Academy after he settled in London in 1863.","physicalDescription":"A man and a woman seated at the base of a bank in a wooded landscape.  The woman cradles a baby in a white blanket and looks down toward its face which is turned into her chest.  The man sits with his legs crossed and holds a violin in his hands whihc he seems to be playing by plucking.  At the hem of the woman's dress is a bonnet lying on the floor.  To the woman's left is a bundle of possessions.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Graham, Thomas Alexander Ferguson","id":"A17191"},"association":{"text":"artist","id":"AAT25103"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"oil paint","id":"AAT15050"},{"text":"canvas","id":"AAT14078"}],"techniques":[{"text":"oil painting","id":"AAT178684"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Oil on canvas","categories":[{"text":"Paintings","id":"THES48917"},{"text":"Scotland","id":"THES262877"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2017JT2739","2017JT2738","2007BP0861","2017JV3639"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"B","id":"THES304628"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"oil paintings","id":"AAT33799"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1870","earliest":"1870-01-01","latest":"1870-12-31"},"association":{"text":"painted","id":"x30138"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by James Orrock","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"30.5","unit":"in","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"estimate","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"46.875","unit":"in","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"estimate","note":""},{"dimension":"","value":"","unit":"","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":"Measurement taken at time of assessment prior to BH decant - Frame Dimensions (mm): H-1072 W-1472 D-108;\nPainting Dimensions (mm): not measured"}],"dimensionsNote":"Dimensions taken from <i>Summary catalogue of British Paintings</i>, Victoria and Albert Museum, 1973","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"J F Graham [18]70","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"signed and dated"}],"objectHistory":"Given by James Orrock, 1900","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Oil painting on canvas, 'The Wayfarers', Thomas Alexander Ferguson Graham, 1870","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["15-1900"],"accessionNumberNum":"15","accessionNumberPrefix":"","accessionYear":1900,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-04-16","recordCreationDate":"2006-02-16","availableToBook":true}}
