Designers and manufacturers in the 1960s sought ways to make chairs in single mouldings, so they would be cheaper and quicker to manufacture.  They also often aimed to produce chairs that would stack, making them more versatile in use. The design of this chair is an exceptionally successful example of the achievement of both aims.\r\n\r\nThe glossy surface of the chair looks as if it was achieved by injection-moulding, but in fact the chair is made of compression-moulded fibreglass.  The innovative S-shape cross section of the leg gave the sheet material stability.  The whole chair could be moulded as one, with only the feet needing to be clipped on.","physicalDescription":"Single piece moulded glass-fibre four-legged chair, in red","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Magistretti, Vico","id":"A16069"},"association":{"text":"designer","id":"AAT25190"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Artemide","id":"A11615"},"association":{"text":"manufacturers","id":"AAT25230"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"fibreglass","id":"AAT183781"}],"techniques":[{"text":"moulded","id":"x30076"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Compression moulded fibreglass","categories":[{"text":"Furniture","id":"THES48948"},{"text":"Plastic","id":"THES49026"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"FWK","id":"THES48597"},"images":["2006AX9540","2006AX9545"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"002","id":"THES341326"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Chair","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Milan (city)","id":"x29007"},"association":{"text":"designed","id":"x30230"},"note":""},{"place":{"text":"Milan (city)","id":"x29007"},"association":{"text":"manufactured","id":"x29350"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1968","earliest":"1968-01-01","latest":"1968-12-31"},"association":{"text":"designed","id":"x30230"},"note":""},{"date":{"text":"1968","earliest":"1968-01-01","latest":"1968-12-31"},"association":{"text":"manufactured","id":"x29350"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"75.4","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"47.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Depth","value":"52","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Height","value":"45","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"seat","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"Dimensions taken from register\r\nChecked LW / CW 28.1.10","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"The Selene chair was shown in the Italian Design Exhibition at the Hallmark Gallery, New York, 1968, and it received a mention of honour in the Compasso d'Oro competition Milan.","briefDescription":"Selene chair, designed by Vico Magistretti, manufactured by Atremide, Italy, 1968","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"<i>Modern chairs 1918-1970</i>, London, Lund Humphries, 1971","id":"AUTH356768"},"details":"","free":""}],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"Mass produced","id":"THES48863"},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["CIRC.280-1970"],"accessionNumberNum":"280","accessionNumberPrefix":"CIRC","accessionYear":1970,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-05-02","recordCreationDate":"2006-02-15","availableToBook":true}}
