Bertoia developed his early chair design ideas while working with Charles Eames and others in California in the late 1940s. \n\nIn the 1950s, when most chairs were made from wood, Bertoia's furniture was viewed as an innovation. The wire grid had the effect of making the chair appear transparent and weightless, and foretold the wireframe renderings that are a feature of computer-related design half a century later. The single, concave form of the seat and back relates the chair to similar experimental furniture by Charles and Ray Eames, and they also used wire grids to make chairs.","physicalDescription":"A diamond shaped chair constructed of a concave grid of wires, supported on a steel rod frame, all painted black.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Bertoia, Harry","id":"A17168"},"association":{"text":"designer","id":"AAT25190"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Knoll International","id":"A11607"},"association":{"text":"manufacturer","id":"x33306"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"steel","id":"AAT133751"}],"techniques":[{"text":"bending","id":"AAT53101"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Bent steel rod","categories":[{"text":"Furniture","id":"THES48948"},{"text":"Interiors","id":"THES48933"},{"text":"Household objects","id":"THES48939"},{"text":"Product design","id":"THES49025"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"FWK","id":"THES48597"},"images":["2006AX9539"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"003","id":"THES344827"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Chair","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"USA","id":"x29333"},"association":{"text":"designed","id":"x30230"},"note":""},{"place":{"text":"United States","id":"x29333"},"association":{"text":"manufactured","id":"x29350"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1952","earliest":"1952-01-01","latest":"1952-12-31"},"association":{"text":"designed","id":"x30230"},"note":""},{"date":{"text":"1953","earliest":"1953-01-01","latest":"1953-12-31"},"association":{"text":"manufactured","id":"x29350"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by Form International","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"775","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"845","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Depth","value":"710","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"Dimensions extrapolated from imperial measurements on register.","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Chair, 'Diamond Chair' designed by Harry Bertoia, steel, 1952; manufactured by Knoll International from 1953","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"Register says chair was made by Form International but all other sources have this chair made by Knoll International","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[{"text":"diamond chairs","id":"AAT170262"}],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["CIRC.82-1969"],"accessionNumberNum":"82","accessionNumberPrefix":"CIRC","accessionYear":1969,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-05-02","recordCreationDate":"2006-02-13","availableToBook":false}}
