He then creates spare, spontaneous decoration on the wet surface. A comparison can be made between his bold designs and the East Asian tradition of painting in ink on paper, since both produce restrained yet lively effects, making full use of plain surfaces and the movement of the artist's brush. 'Meditation - Dream IV' is a low, squat vase in a shape known to Korean ceramics students as a  rice bale bottle, because it reminds the viewer of a bundle of harvested rice stalks. Choi Sung-Jae's work has been widely exhibited in Korea and in the United States.","physicalDescription":"","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Choi, Sung-Jae","id":"A17126"},"association":{"text":"maker","id":"AAT251917"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"","categories":[{"text":"Ceramics","id":"THES48982"},{"text":"Vases","id":"THES48879"},{"text":"Stoneware","id":"THES48890"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"EAS","id":"THES48596"},"images":["2009CR4888","2009CR4887","2021MY1880"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"137","id":"THES49876"},"free":"","case":"18","shelf":"3","box":""},{"current":{"text":"007","id":"THES341581"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Vase","id":""}],[{"text":"Storage box","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Korea","id":"x30965"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"2004","earliest":"2004-01-01","latest":"2004-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by Bernie and Sue Pucker in honour of David Solomon","dimensions":[],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"'Meditation - Dream IV', glazed stoneware rectangular vase with free linear decoration, by Sung-Jae Choi, Korea, 2004","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["FE.324:1-2005","FE.324:2-2005"],"accessionNumberNum":"324","accessionNumberPrefix":"FE","accessionYear":2005,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE","Vase","Storage box"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-04-08","recordCreationDate":"2006-01-27","availableToBook":false}}
