The PL table is typical of French furniture of the period, which dissolved traditional forms (in this instance, the kind of small table known as a <i>gueridon</i>) into an interplay of geometrical planes. The manufacturer of the table was Neotu, a gallery founded in 1985, dedicated to issuing editions of furniture and design objects, with premises in Paris and New York. One of the first exhibitions at Neotu was a solo show of work by Martin Szekely.","physicalDescription":"Pedestal table with circular top, composed of cut steel sheet and steel tube. The tubular steel pedestal sits on a semicircular base and is joined by three small horizontal rods at the top to the edge of a vertical, blade-like, triangular-shaped leg that is welded to the underside of the table top on its short side and rests on its point. The base is raised on three small round feet. The table is enamelled grey. The minimalism of the design suggests lightness but because of its material the table is very heavy.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Szekely, Martin","id":"A17096"},"association":{"text":"designer","id":"x36960"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Neotu","id":"A17098"},"association":{"text":"manufacturer","id":"x33306"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"steel","id":"AAT133751"}],"techniques":[{"text":"enamelled","id":"x30139"},{"text":"welded","id":"AAT53958"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Enamelled steel, cut and welded","categories":[{"text":"Furniture","id":"THES48948"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"FWK","id":"THES48597"},"images":["2006AX9537","2012FP3896","2012FP3618"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"135","id":"THES49878"},"free":"","case":"BY8","shelf":"EXP","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Table","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"France","id":"x28849"},"association":{"text":"manufactured","id":"x29350"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1983","earliest":"1983-01-01","latest":"1983-12-31"},"association":{"text":"designed","id":"x29338"},"note":""},{"date":{"text":"1994","earliest":"1994-01-01","latest":"1994-12-31"},"association":{"text":"manufactured","id":"x29350"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"746","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"500","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"Measured on 15/9/2010 by LC.","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"This table is a version of an 18th century French furniture table, the queridon. Since the 18th century this term has described a low, circular table with three legs or tripod base while in the 20th century it has come to be used for what is called, in English, an occational table. Sleek, hi-tech in feel, although slightly let down by the quality of the welding, its minimalism is very much of its period. The table is eminently functional and has continued in small series of batch production since its original design in 1985.","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"PL pedestal table, designed by Martin Szekely, 1983, manufactured by Neotu, Paris, 1994.","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"Attribution note: small batch production since 1985","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[{"text":"'PL' PEDESTAL TABLE (Guéridon)\r\nDesigned by Martin Szekely (French, born 1956), 1983\r\nMade by Neotu, Paris, 1993\r\nEnamelled steel\r\n\r\nSome of Martin Szekely's work has been described as having a \"powerful engineering rhetoric\" deriving from his use of geometric forms ad industrial materials.\r\n\r\nW.3-1994","date":{"text":"1994-2006","earliest":"1994-01-01","latest":"2006-12-31"}},{"text":"‘PL’ pedestal table \r\n1983\r\nMartin Szekely (born 1956)\r\n\r\nFrance\r\nMade 1994 for Neotu, Paris\r\nCut and welded steel, painted\r\nFeet: rubber\r\n\r\nMuseum no.
