The Taj, from the garden.","type":"assigned by artist"}],"summaryDescription":"The small seated figure in the right-hand mid-ground gives the scale of the trees and buildings in this view of the Taj Mahal from the garden. The photographer, Eugene Clutterbuck Impey (1830-1904), was in the service of the British administration in India. He was a skilled amateur photographer and contributed to exhibitions organised by the Bengal Photographic Society.\r\n\r\nHe published his photographs in a book. The caption for this one reads: 'When the Taj is lighted up for the Governor-General or other great personage by means of Bengal lights projected on it from the side the building, rising snow white against the dark sky and trees, looks most grand and impressive from this spot. The spandrils here and in the gateways, and the angles and other important details, are laid with agates, bloodstones, jaspers, and other precious stones, combined in wreaths, scrolls, and frets which are equally beautiful in colour and exquisite in design.'","physicalDescription":"This photograph shows the Taj Mahal as taken from the garden. In the foreground is the marble platform for the central fountain, on which there is a seated figure. There are trees which obscure the view of the monument and on the left hand side are a row of fountain heads in a marbel canal leading towards the Taj.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Impey, Eugene Clutterbuck","id":"A14100"},"association":{"text":"photographer","id":"AAT25687"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[],"techniques":[{"text":"albumen process","id":"AAT133274"},{"text":"photography","id":"AAT54225"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Albumen print","categories":[{"text":"Photographs","id":"THES48910"},{"text":"Architecture","id":"THES48993"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"SSEA","id":"THES48598"},"images":["2006AC4993"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"003","id":"THES403839"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"photograph","id":"AAT46300"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Agra","id":"x30318"},"association":{"text":"photographed","id":"x30151"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1860-1865","earliest":"1860-01-01","latest":"1865-12-31"},"association":{"text":"photographed","id":"x30151"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Length","value":"27.8","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"photograph","note":""},{"dimension":"Height","value":"22","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"photograph","note":""},{"dimension":"Length","value":"33","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"mount","note":""},{"dimension":"Height","value":"26.6","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"mount","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Historical significance: Eugene Clutterbuck Impey was in the service of the British administration in India in the 19th century.
