Sothern, a British actor who had made a career in America,  played Dundreary in New York and then made his London debut in the role.  Originally the character was fairly insignificant but Sothern worked it up until it became the talk of the town. The play was revived several times at the Haymarket until 1878, with Sothern as Dundreary.  Later his son Edwin Hugh revived the part. \r\n\r\nEdward Askew Sothern was essentially an eccentric comedian, ideally suited to the portrayal of the foolish, vain Dundreary. XHe did attempt romantic roles in other plays, but none enjoyed the same acclaim.
