The cloisonné technique involves creating decoration using metal enclosures (or ‘cloisons’) that are then filled with coloured enamel paste which is fired and polished. \r\n\r\nWe know little about the donor of these pieces, but stylistically they could not have been made much before they were bequeathed to the V&A in 1886. The scene on the central panel of this vase closely resembles the type of image found on Japanese prints of this period. Two people are washing giant radishes in a river by a rustic cottage. The borders of the panel form a large abstract Seven Lucky Treasures (Japanese: ‘shippo’) motif. The whole vase is completely covered with abstract geometric and floral patterns as well as large butterflies and the mythical phoenix-like Ho-o bird.","physicalDescription":"Copper-bodied vase decorated in brass wires and cloisonné enamels.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"copper","id":"AAT11020"}],"techniques":[{"text":"cloisonne","id":"AAT53778"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Copper, brass and cloisonné enamels","categories":[{"text":"Vases","id":"THES48879"},{"text":"Enamels","id":"THES48876"}],"styles":[{"text":"Meiji","id":"AAT18567"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"EAS","id":"THES48596"},"images":["2006BF0220","2006BA0355","2006BA0361","2006BA0360","2006AC7009","2006AC7001","2006AC6996"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"002","id":"THES344573"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Vase","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Nagoya","id":"x32167"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":"probably"}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1870-1880","earliest":"1865-01-01","latest":"1880-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[{"object":{"text":"1271A-1886","id":"O123080"},"association":"Pair"}],"creditLine":"Dixon Bequest","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"55.3","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Bequeathed by Joshua Dixon, accessioned in 1886.
