His cloisonné enamels are characterised by skilful use of intricate wirework and superb attention to detail, as seen here. \r\n\r\nThe designs on his earlier pieces are relatively traditional, consisting mainly of stylised botanical and formal geometric motifs. This piece is decorated in silver wires with flowers, two flying ducks and a butterfly. The area above the base plate, below the rim and the lid are decorated with bands of the Seven Lucky Treasures (Japanese: ‘shippo’) motif. The rims and foot-rings are of gilded copper.\r\n \r\nThe interior of the foot carries a silver plaque with the well-executed signature of Namikawa Yasuyuki. However, the design and execution of the ducks are more reminiscent of the work of another cloisonné maker, Shibata, who worked in Kyoto around the same time as Yasuyuki.\r\n\r\nThe designs on much of Yasuyuki’s later work tend to be more pictorial, consisting mainly of scenes from nature and views of landmarks in and around Kyoto. His work included both pieces with designs predominantly defined by wires and pieces where the pictorial composition is balanced by large areas of pure coloured enamel.","physicalDescription":"Lidded vase with cloisonné enamel decoration","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Namikawa Yasuyuki","id":"A3767"},"association":{"text":"maker","id":"AAT251917"},"note":"Carries baseplate with signature of Namikawa Yasuyuki, but style is more reminiscent of work by Shibata."}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"copper","id":"AAT11020"}],"techniques":[{"text":"cloisonné","id":"AAT53778"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Copper body decorated with cloisonné enamels","categories":[{"text":"Containers","id":"THES48972"}],"styles":[{"text":"Meiji","id":"AAT18567"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"EAS","id":"THES48596"},"images":["2006AC5460","2006AC8430","2006AC5454","2006AC5431"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"005","id":"THES363969"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"005","id":"THES363969"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Jar","id":""}],[{"text":"Lid","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Kyoto","id":"x31966"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1880-1890","earliest":"1875-01-01","latest":"1890-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"13.6","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"Kyoto Namikawa","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"Namikawa [of] Kyoto","transliteration":"","type":"","note":""}],"objectHistory":"Purchased from John Sparks (17 Duke Street, Manchester Square.), accessioned in 1903.
