Following a project where he damaged a chair he had used to support a piece of wood he was sawing, he set about designing a multi-functional workbench and sawhorse to prevent further damage to his furniture. He initially set up his own design company, Mate Tools, to make the benches above a barn in Hoddesdon, Hertfordshire, before agreeing a licence with Black & Decker in the early 1970s to exploit the home and international market.\r\nThe product's success was due in part to the key role played by television commercials to raise awareness of the product at a time when there was an enthusiasm for home improvements and DIY.","physicalDescription":"A rectractable workbench with a plywood bench top and die cast aluminium legs.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Hickman, Ron","id":"A39246"},"association":{"text":"designer","id":"x36960"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Black and Decker","id":"A39247"},"association":{"text":"manufacturer","id":"x33306"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"plywood","id":"AAT12849"},{"text":"aluminium","id":"AAT11015"},{"text":"plastic","id":"AAT14570"}],"techniques":[{"text":"die casting","id":"AAT53106"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"","categories":[{"text":"Design Council Award Winner","id":"THES49046"},{"text":"Household objects","id":"THES48939"},{"text":"Product design","id":"THES49025"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"FWK","id":"THES48597"},"images":["2019MB2272"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"SR010","id":"THES341110"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"workbench","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"United Kingdom","id":"x29336"},"association":{"text":"Manufactured","id":"x29350"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca.1973","earliest":"1968-01-01","latest":"1977-12-31"},"association":{"text":"Made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"80","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"95","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Depth","value":"67","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Historical significance: Winner of the Council of Industrial Design's Design Centre Award in 1973.\r\n","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Workbench, Workmate Mark 2, designed by Ron Hickman and manufactured by Black & Decker, plywood, aluminium and plastic, ca. 1973","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["CIRC.469-1973"],"accessionNumberNum":"469","accessionNumberPrefix":"CIRC","accessionYear":1973,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2026-05-08","recordCreationDate":"2011-04-28","availableToBook":false}}
