'The more I thought about this, the more I came to believe that there could be a large market for a strong, lightweight trolley that looked good enough to appeal to even the most mod-dressed girl. So, during lunch in the buffet car on the way back to Birmingham, I sketched out a very rough idea for such a trolley. When I showed this to my managing director, Ernest Deavin, he immediately agreed to make a prototype. There were no further drawings: I knew exactly how I wanted the trolley to look.'\n\nConstructed from grey-enamelled steel tube the trolleys had silent-running wheels on nylon bushes and designed for use in the home, office and factory. The product won a Design Council Award in 1969.","physicalDescription":"Ease-e-load domestic and general-purpose trolleys, enamelled steel frame and nylon bushings.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Martin, Harold","id":"A39218"},"association":{"text":"designers","id":"AAT25190"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Deavin-Irvine Products Ltd","id":"A39219"},"association":{"text":"manufacturers","id":"AAT25230"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"steel","id":"AAT133751"},{"text":"nylon","id":"AAT14462"}],"techniques":[{"text":"enamelling","id":"AAT53773"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"enamelled steel frame and nylon bushings.","categories":[{"text":"Design Council Award Winner","id":"THES49046"},{"text":"Tourism & Travel","id":"THES250702"},{"text":"Product design","id":"THES49025"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"FWK","id":"THES48597"},"images":["2019MA8451"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"M","id":"THES296974"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"trolley","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Great Britain","id":"x32019"},"association":{"text":"designed","id":"x29338"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca.1969","earliest":"1964-01-01","latest":"1973-12-31"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by Deavin-Irvine Products Ltd","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Width","value":"33","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":"Measurement converted from department files"},{"dimension":"Length","value":"81.3","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":"Measurement converted from department files"},{"dimension":"Height","value":"91.4","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Historical significance: Winner of the Design Centre Award in 1969.\r\n\r\nSource: vads.ac.uk","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Ease-e-load domestic and general-purpose trolleys, designed by Harold Martin and manufactured by Deavin-Irvine Products Ltd.","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[{"text":"The Design Council","id":"A16731"}],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[{"text":"Design Council Awards","id":"V516"}],"contentOthers":[{"text":"trolley (luggage)","id":"x40600"}],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["CIRC.728-1969"],"accessionNumberNum":"728","accessionNumberPrefix":"CIRC","accessionYear":1969,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2026-04-21","recordCreationDate":"2011-04-27","availableToBook":false}}
