Born in South Africa, he studied architecture at the Univerity of Pretoria and at the Royal College of Art in London.  \n\nGerald Abramovitz started work on the design of this lamp in 1961 with the intention of producing a light source that would give local but diffused light and which would satisfactorily relate with modern desk furniture. The results were presented to Best & Lloyd in 1961 in the form of working drawings and a prototype. Further modifications were made by the company's design engineers in collaboration with Abramovitz to improve the lamp technically and to make production simpler and more economical. The Mark 2 version has been further amended to conform to British Standard requirements.","physicalDescription":"Cantilever fluorescent desk lamp, anodised aluminium with a steel base.
