Maker: Simplex Electric Co Ltd. Credaplan low mass electric boiling plates (Individual QuickDiscs, model 385) each with its own spillage dish. They are supplied complete with wing nuts, steel and asbestos washers, and tubes for mounting in any material which will withstand 310øF. The control box is available for one to four controls and incorporates a neon light which glows if any disc is turned on. Controls can be fitted either flat on the work surface or vertically in front of or behind it, with or without a fascia plate. The discs conformtoBS3456:A12. Prices: discs £4 15s each; control box from £5 4s (one way). \r\n\r\nThe Individual Quick-Discs were developed to give an entirely new flexibility in kitchen design by allowing hotplates to be placed wherever they are needed. The control panel is completely separate from the hotplates, and can therefore be mounted in the most convenient position. Although the hotplates are at the moment mostly being sold to cabinet manufacturers for building-in to kitchen units, they are also available through Electricity Board showrooms, builders' merchants and some retailers. They should, however, always be installed by a qualified electrician. \r\n\r\nThe Individual Quick-Discs are based on the electric cooking plates used in the Simplex Electric Co's cookers. Special care has been taken to make the hotplates safe and easy to install. E. G. Plucknett managing director, Electrical Division of Tube Investments Ltd \r\n\r\nA spillage dish around the hotplate will retain nearly half-a-pint of any liquid spilt, but even if this amount is exceeded a heat-resistant neoprene seal prevents any liquid getting near electrically live parts (see sectional diagram on opposite page). Limitations on proximity to walls, etc. are carefully laid down in the detailed instructions provided with each installation. The Quick-Discs are simple to install, templates being provided for cut-outs. \r\n\r\nEach disc is numbered, with the controls having numbers to match. The control box, which incorporates a neon indicator light, can be supplied with the 'off' position on the controls either at 9 o'clock or 12 o'clock. The number 1 control has a booster incorporated in its circuit to give a very fast heating rate to the number 1 plate. The company The Simplex Electric Co Ltd. one of the largest manufacturers of electric cooking equipment in the United Kingdom, is a member of the Tube Investments group of companies. Creda products, which now include spin driers and space heating equipment in addition to cookers, have been manufactured by Simplex since 1906. The designers The company's own design team works closely with the marketing and production departments of the company from the first stages of every project, the industrial designer chiefly responsible for the Credaplan range being Frank Hillman.\n\nDesign Journal, No.209, <u>The Duke of Edinburgh's Prize for Elegant Design and the Design Centre Awards 1966</u>, May 1966. pp.28-57.\n\n","physicalDescription":"Electric hotplates and control box for hotplate.","artistMakerPerson":[],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Creda Design Centre","id":"A39190"},"association":{"text":"designers","id":"AAT25190"},"note":""},{"name":{"text":"Simplex Electric Co","id":"A39191"},"association":{"text":"manufacturers","id":"AAT25230"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"","categories":[{"text":"Design Council Award Winner","id":"THES49046"},{"text":"Metalwork","id":"THES48920"},{"text":"Product design","id":"THES49025"},{"text":"Tools & Equipment","id":"THES48883"}],"styles":[{"text":"20th century second half","id":"x44295"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"MET","id":"THES48599"},"images":["2019LY8875","2019MA7330"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"005","id":"THES338010"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"004","id":"THES338009"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"control box for hotplate","id":""}],[{"text":"hotplate","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""},{"place":{"text":"Birmingham","id":"x28748"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1966-1967","earliest":"1966-01-01","latest":"1967-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Gift of the manufacturer.","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Diameter","value":"10","unit":"in","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"CIRC.391-1967","note":"Taken from the register."},{"dimension":"Width","value":"6.5","unit":"in","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"CIRC.391A-1967","note":"Taken from the register."},{"dimension":"Depth","value":"5","unit":"in","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"CIRC.391A-1967","note":"Taken from the register."}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Historical significance: Winner of the Design Centre Award in 1966.","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Credaplan Individual Quick-Discs electric hotplates and control box, designed by Creda Design Centre and manufactured by Simplex Electric Co., Birmingham, 1966-67.
